Aquatic therapy is a gentler alternative to land-based therapy and serves various purposes. From injury recovery to athletic training to help improve strength, flexibility, mobility, gait and endurance in a relaxing setting.
Water provides a combination of buoyancy, support, and resistance, making the pool a safe and effective place to receive rehabilitation.
At Carson Valley Health (CVH), we often use aquatic therapy to:
Treat degenerative conditions like arthritis.
Help with recovery after orthopedic or spine surgery.
Improve conditioning.
Improve balance and reduce the risk of falls.
Our certified aquatic therapist is a licensed occupational therapist with special training and experience in aquatic therapy. Our expert will work one-on-one in the pool with you. That doesn’t always happen in other aquatic therapy programs, where the therapists may direct your therapy from outside the pool.
Our aquatic therapy facilities
CVH’s aquatic therapy program is offered at the Carson Valley Swim Center in Minden. The facilities include:
A therapeutic pool, which is heated to 90 to 93 degrees Fahrenheit and has a depth of 2.5 to 5 feet.
A main pool, which is heated to 81 degrees Fahrenheit and has a depth of 4 to 13 feet.
What to expect in aquatic therapy
Our therapist will design an aquatic therapy program that meets your individual needs. Over the course of your treatment, we’ll help you learn to do the exercises on your own, so you can continue to enjoy the therapeutic benefits even after treatment ends.
Some of the things you might work on in our aquatic therapy program are:
● Range-of-motion exercises.
● Core stability training.
● Strengthening.
● Progressive resistance exercises using buoyancy equipment.
Immediate benefits of aquatic exercises include increased circulation, muscle relaxation and range of motion, and decreased swelling, pain, muscle spasm and spasticity.
Long-term benefits include improved sleep, digestion, and healing. Aquatic therapy also helps reduce anxiety. Warm water prompts relaxation and facilitates stretching.
