Occupational Therapy

If you’ve had an illness, injury or surgery, occupational therapy can help you regain your independence and get back to living your best life. Whether you need to relearn skills like eating and dressing after a stroke or improve strength after an injury or surgery, the occupational therapists at Carson Valley Health (CVH) can help.

Our occupational therapy expertise

The team at CVH includes experienced occupational therapists who have exceptional skills in a broad range of therapies. We provide inpatient and outpatient services for both children and adults.

Here are some of the challenges we treat:

● Childhood developmental delays, autism spectrum disorder and cerebral palsy.

● Cognitive (thinking and memory) concerns.

● Hand and upper extremity conditions.

● Neurological issues, such as those caused by stroke, brain injury and Parkinson’s disease.

● Orthopedic conditions, such as arthritis, or recovery from joint surgery.

● Spinal cord injuries.

What to expect when you work with a CVH occupational therapist

Your first outpatient occupational therapy visit will start with an evaluation in one of our private treatment rooms. Your occupational therapist may test your joint motion, muscle strength and motor coordination. This will help them understand how your condition affects your ability to perform daily activities.

Using the results of this evaluation (along with instructions from your doctor), your occupational therapist will create a treatment plan tailored to meet your individual needs. This plan could involve treatments, such as:

  • Adaptive equipment, like reaching devices, eating aids and splints.

  • Aquatic therapy, which uses the buoyancy of water to help you receive therapy with less stress on your body.

  • Cognitive training.

  • Daily self-care skill development, such as practicing personal hygiene tasks like brushing teeth, bathing and using the toilet.

  • Specialized exercises and activities to maximize your ability to function independently.
